Updated 2025 Toyota GR Corolla to include an automatic option revealed

The Toyota GR Corolla hot hatch, which now comes with an automatic gearbox, sports a revised bumper that provides better cooling.

It has been announced that the 2025 Toyota GR Corolla will get an automated gearbox in addition to a facelift for the hot hatch.

The revised five-door hatchback GR Corolla, which will be available in local stores between October and December 2024, will get an optional eight-speed torque-converter automatic gearbox, just like the smaller GR Yaris.

With feedback from Toyota Gazoo Racing rally drivers, an eight-speed vehicle was designed and put through durability testing for use in circuit and rally racing.

The gear selector on the GR Corolla’s automatic versions is taken from the regular Corolla models, and new paddle shifters are positioned on the steering wheel.

With torque from its 1.6-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine raised 30 Nm to 400 Nm for both gears, matching the upgraded GR Yaris, it will be available with the current six-speed manual.

The redesigned GR Corolla’s power output stays at 221kW, which is somewhat less than the new GR Yaris’ 224kW.

Toyota claims that the updated front bumper improves aerodynamic efficiency and cooling performance, while the front and rear suspension have been adjusted to enhance handling, “especially when accelerating through corners.”

The all-wheel-drive GR Corolla, which debuted in 2022 and made its way to Australia last year, has not undergone any additional modifications.

More than half of buyers of Toyota Australia’s GR86 and GR Supra ordered automatics, according to Sean Hanley, the company’s head of sales and marketing. This indicates a trend away from manual transmissions in sports vehicles when an automatic is an option.

“People [would] gravitate towards an auto if it was available, based on [sales data of auto GR Supra and GR86] representing over half of sales now,” he stated.

When the new 2025 Toyota GR Corolla launches in the fourth quarter of this year, more information, including its Australian price and specifications, should become official.

The GTS manual version of the current Toyota GR Corolla starts at $64,190 before on-road expenses.
